Urban and manual, the Dolce Gusto Oblo

Urban and manual, the Dolce Gusto Oblo

I received as a gift the coffee maker YY2290FD, more often called Dolce Gusto Oblo. I have it in black and I’m not an expert on coffee makers. I’ve used them before, but I’m not particularly familiar with the specifics of one brand to another.

From what I understand the Dolce Gusto range is an efficient and greedy solution to prepare a large number of hot or cold drinks. A detail that its competitors do not allow. But here is the presentation of the Oblo coffeemaker and its particularities.

Technical presentation of the Dolce Gusto Oblo

Urban and manual, the Dolce Gusto Oblo

The Oblo coffeemaker has nothing to envy to the unique design of the Sweet Taste Movement. They each have their own style, which we like or dislike, but which does not leave us indifferent. The Oblo is available in four colours: black, white, orange and red. It is a thin machine, but rather wide. It has a 0.8 l tank which is all across the board.

With the Oblo de Dolce Gusto coffeemaker, it is possible to prepare from real espressos, thanks to the 15 bars of pressure. The machine can also be used for cold teas, cappuccinos, hot chocolates, etc. There is a wide variety of drinks available and this choice seems to double simply because of the possibility to prepare them hot or cold.

On the other hand, we only prepare one cup at a time. Luckily the service is fast. And when it’s all over, the coffee maker goes into standby mode automatically.

The cup rest can be installed at three different heights to adapt it to the size of your cups.

Finally, the machine emits 61 dB, which is quite noisy, but rather standard for an electric coffee maker.

The Oblo, a manual coffee maker

Urban and manual, the Dolce Gusto Oblo

It’s kind of weird to have a coffeemaker that’s electric, but it’s manual. In my mind the advantage of a coffeemaker was that it did everything without help. But that’s not always the case. So the Dolce Gusto is a manual coffeemaker, which means that the coffee flow is done and stops only with a manipulation of the consumer.

Specifically we’re getting the machine ready by filling the tank and installing a pod. Then switch the machine on with the on/off button on the side. For a few minutes the machine will preheat. Then the on/off button will be solid green to indicate that everything is ready. That’s when things get tough.

The lever above the machine must be operated. In one direction you get hot water, in the other direction cold water. And to stop the water flow, the lever must be moved back to the centre.

You may be wondering which quantity is suitable for which pod. A legitimate question, even if the answer is stupidly on the pods, in millilitres. So it’s not easy at all to know when to stop. You would have to use a measuring cup, or measure each cup and remember the results.

This manual aspect seems to me to be an oversimplified and impractical version. In fact, I have been told that it is a solution that coffee lovers prefer, as it gives them more control over the drink and its intensity.

The quality of Dolce Gusto drinks

It is difficult to evaluate the beverages prepared by Dolce Gusto machines because I am not an expert, having drunk very little coffee from other brands.
However, I do know that Dolce Gusto makes it possible to make real espressos unlike the Senseo machines.

Most importantly, when you receive your machine, you will receive an assortment of six different capsules. It’s a great way to discover the brand’s varieties and to decide for one batch of pods rather than another.

My opinion on the Dolce Gusto Oblo coffeemaker

Urban and manual, the Dolce Gusto Oblo

This coffeemaker has the merit of being really nice and stand out from many other models that are all the same. In addition, we immediately receive capsules to test several drinks and this small commercial gesture pleased me a lot.

On the manual start side, it’s true that it takes a few tries and that I’ve had sock juice as coffee once or twice. But in the end, as soon as you know the capacity of your cups, you quickly find the right balance and you can modify it slightly according to your taste.

On the other hand, I did find that he was difficult to replace the tank. And the cord’s a little short, so I have to use an extension cord.

Finally, I took a look at the price. Buying a Dolce Gusto Oblo coffeemaker can be economical or excessive. The orange model I like very much costs 134 €! While the same coffeemaker in black is only 63 €. Unfortunately this price which varies according to the colors is very frequent. You will find other coffee makers and therefore other prices in the Dolce Gusto machine comparison.

The plusses:

  • 6 dosettes offertes
  • takes up little space
  • manual dosing
  • design urbain
  • wide choice of drinks

The least:

  • hard-to-place tank
  • short cord

Conclusion

The Dolce Gusto Oblo coffeemaker is a uniquely designed machine that allows you to prepare coffees totally to your taste. It takes a little time to learn how to use it, but its manual operation is the only one that offers such customization.
All you have to do is choose in which colour you would like to order it!
